The girl who played with fire

The Girl who played with fire is the second novel in the Millennium trilogy. Written by the Swedish writer Stieg Larsson, it is an international best selling thriller set in current Sweden.

The characters in this book are well-known to those who have already read the first one: journalist Mikael Blomkvist and the freelance investigator Lisbeth Salander. Now Lisbeth becomes the main suspect of a murder, a triple one, since her fingerprints are found on the murder weapon used to shoot three people on the same day. Of course, Mikael is determined to prove her innocence.
Shocked by the fact that two of the victims were colleagues of his, he works both on his own and with the police to discover the truth. Meanwhile Lisbeth, gone into hiding, is also making her own inquiries.

The character of Lisbeth is what makes this book strong, and not only this one but in general, Larsson's books, so different from other detective fiction works. Fictional investigators tend to be middle-aged males; however, Lisbeth is a girl, she's young and a computer whiz, whose background is unfolded in this sequel.

Not only is The girl who played with fire a book that you can't put down, but it is also in tune with our present society. In fact, if you are a crime novel lover, you can't miss the Millennium trilogy, it is a must!

Deeper

Continuamos con las recomendaciones sobre la serie Túneles.

En un post anterior, Javier González nos recomendaba leer el primer libro de esta serie, titulado Tunnels; ahora nos hace una audio-recomendación sobre el segundo libro de la serie, Deeper.

"This review is about the book Deeper, the second part of Tunnels, a book written by Roderick Gordon and Brian Williams.

The book tells the story of three boys, Will, Chester and Cal, who nowadays have arrived at the Deeps, a group of caves used as a "prison" for the Styx, a group of strange and evil humans.
They try to find Will's father, called Dr Burrows.  The main characters are: Will, a boy who is looking for his father; Chester, his best friend; Cal, his easily frightened brother; Drake, a strange man from the earth's surface, and Elliot, a woman rescued by Drake years ago.

This is one of the best books I've read, and I strongly recommend it."

David Lodge, my favourite author

David Lodge is my favourite English author. I have read all his novels and works and I think he is a must. Why? Because he is witty, his plots are hilarious and he has a neat vision of the academic world, not only from a literary point of view but also from a linguistic one.
The way he plays with language, the way he muddles up characters and the way he straightens plots up so that the reader meets fine endings is just awesome.
There is no void work by David Lodge; all of them, no matter if they are fiction, non-fiction or theatre, are bound to imprint further thoughts on the reader. When one finishes reading one of David Lodge’s books, one is already looking forward to grabbing the next one.
Impossible to put down, his books will make you travel from the 60s anguishing Catholic principles in The British Museum is falling down, through the 70s University campus lifestyle in Changing Places, to how one can cope with deafness in Deaf sentence.

Tunnels, by Javier G.

Javier González, 14 años, nos recomienda leer Túneles, el primer libro de una serie de la que no se ha perdido ninguno hasta el momento, y lo hace en inglés.

Tunnels was written by Roderick Gordon and Brian Williams. I’ve chosen this book because I am completely sure that when they make a film about it, it will be very successful, and it could take the place of Harry Potter, now that it is over, across cinemas.

The book tells the story of two guys, Will Burrows and Chester Rawls, who discovered a city hidden in the earth, called ‘The Colony’. However, they became trapped by the Styx, the chiefs of the city. There, Will meets his biological family, who will help him leave The Colony and rescue Chester.
The story is set in current times, in The Colony, a city hidden in the earth, built by the Styx.

The protagonist is Will Burrows, a guy who was taken from The Colony and left in Highfield when he was a baby. In the story, he’ll try to escape from The Colony. Other main characters are: Chester, Will’s best friend, who became trapped by the Styx; Dr Burrows, Will’s adoptive father, now lost under the Colony; and Cal, Will’s brother and friend.

I like the book because it is the first part of a best-selling collection. The best part is when Will and Cal took the train to The Deeps, because the three most important characters finally meet.

I recommend this book because it tells an exciting adventure in a very weird world.
