This novel is about a love affair between Jadine and
Son, two Black Americans from very different
worlds. Jadine is a beautiful fashion model who has been born
with a silverspoon in her mouth thanks to the Streets, a wealthy white family
who employ Jadine's aunt and uncle as servants. Son is a poor, strong-minded guy
who washes up at the Streets' estate on a Caribbean island.
As Jadine and Son become involved, their affair brings
the end of the world to the estate. They travel back to the U.S. to look for a
place they can both feel at home, but find that their homes are just poison for
each other. The struggle of Jadine and Son reveals the pain and compromises
confronting Black Americans seeking to live and love in integrity in the States.
